Great Horned Owl

Great horned owls are one of the most widespread species of owls, living all over the United States and most of Canada, and as far south as Central and South America and the Straits of Magellan. Great horned owls are big and bulky (3-4 pounds), standing 18-25" tall with a wingspan of 36-60" long. Males and females are similar in appearance, with the female being slightly larger. The brown body plumage is covered with darker brown spots and white throat feathers. The facial disk may have orange or greyish feathers. The common name "horned owl" comes from the large ear tufts.
